PHILIPPE MANOURY

Despite his training as a pianiste and composer, Philippe Manoury maintains that he is self-taught. His discovery of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s music had a decisive influence on his writing, often influenced by mathematical models. This interest led him to IRCAM where he was a part of the development of Max/MSP. This research was both the starting point and the inspiration of his oeuvre. Manoury has continued this research incessantly in parallel to his activity as a composer.

Manoury has taught composition at the CNSMD de Lyon (1987-1997) and at at the University of California Sand Diego (2004-2012). From 1998 to 2000, he headed the Académie de composition at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. In 2013, he was named composition professor at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin.
