Percussion Night
Opening the Night of Percussion, the alliance between solo percussion and low-tech electronics, as imagined by Laurent Mariusse, led to composers inspired by this marriage. All the students in Steven Schick's class have taken two paths tremendously far from the art of the continuum. In Philippe Leroux's work, continuity is familiar with the intrusion of ellipses and silence in its structure and phrasing. In Steve Reich's famous Drumming from 1970, movement never seems to need to interrupt the performance of gradual phasing and dephasing, a unique compositional process based on a very simple motif, with an immediately tangible force that has marked several choreographers.
