BEAT FURRER
A trained pianist, Beat Furrer moved to Vienna in 1975 to study composition with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. In 1985, he founded the ensemble Klangforum Wien where he was the artistic directior until 1992. Since then, he has taught at the University of Graz.
The visual arts, literature, and jazz form the background for his first works. Certain techniques belong to visual processes: overlapping layers that focus on an object while revisiting the structure, chiaroscuro effects… A tendancy to leave certain elements unsecured or to let figures develop independently are marks of his writing. The voice, from noised babbling to proper language, plays a major role in Furrer's music.
